“It’s a common complaint amongst the broke — you’re simply too poor to file for bankruptcy. It may be true. New data submitted to the National Bureau of Economic Research suggests that the cost of bankruptcy will prevent between 200,000 and 1 million Americans from filing this year. Another 200,000 are expected to rely on their tax returns to cover the fees.” — Americans Too Broke to File For Bankruptcy - Finances - Law and Daily Life

Oklahoma City LGBTQ advocacy group plans major pushback against city appearance by hatemonger Scott Lively -

timekiller-s:

This is the Facebook event page for something that’s going to be happening at 7 p.m. Friday at Church of the Open Arms UCC, 3131 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Oklahoma City. Speakers will include Truth Wins Out founder Wayne Besen and Neill Spurgeon, a survivor of so-called “reparitive therapy.”

The Cimarron Alliance Foundation is holding this event in direct opposition to a simultaneous event across town by antigay activist Scott Lively:

Friends, Scott Lively is coming to town. If that name sounds vaguely familiar, it should. He is an extremely dangerous man with a lie-filled message of hate. He is a holocaust-revisionist of the worst order. The saddest part about his appearance in Oklahoma City is that he has been invited by a church to teach and preach his lies. Draper Park Christian Church in South OKC has defied wisdom in having this man come to spread his poison here.

Scott Lively claims to “know more about homosexuality than just about anybody in the world.” Really? Then how can he possibly claim that gay men orchestrated the holocaust? Or go against all accepted science and claim that being gay is a choice? Or state the LGBT community is the cause of the Rwanda genocide? He claims that so-called ex-gay therapy can change people, too. It does, but in the worst possible way.

Nine years after we were lied into war with Iraq, those who objected deserve some praise -

I was one who protested and lobbied against it, but I don’t seek praise. I’ll just take some indication that the American people have learned something. Unfortunately, I’m not seeing much evidence of that. Or not enough, anyway. We (most of us) are still ignorant of the rest of the world, lulled into submission by our horrid media, and easy prey for corrupt politicians.

Libertarians: Only now, at the end, do you understand... -

Noahpinion:

Because the superpower bankrolling America’s libertarian movement is simply our version of the right-wing oligarch-and-racist coalition that crops up in every nation from time to time. The American conservative movement wants a strong executive who wields many of the powers of a tyrant of old, in order to “protect” us (from “terrorists,” subversive elements at home, or outsiders in general). It wants a justice system oriented toward protecting tradition, group rights, and the social order (like Japan’s system). It wants to restrict immigration by nonwhite racial groups. It wants heavy government regulation of personal morality. And it occasionally wants wars of choice.
In other words, it is deeply anti-liberty.

Rebecca Solnit points out, “violence” within and by the Occupy movement in this country — we’re talking about several sexual assaults in Occupy camps, a suicide, drug use, and a small amount of property damage, bottles thrown, and the like by outliers at Occupy demonstrations — has in certain quarters somehow been enough to discredit the movement, even in some cases to paint it as a kind of living nightmare.  Such violence, minimal as it might have been, instantly discredited Occupy on the American landscape.

Secret documents reveal DHS lied about tracking Americans on social media | The Raw Story -

One of the nation’s leading electronic privacy groups claimed this week that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) misled members of Congress during a recent hearing on whether the Department is paying a defense contractor $11.4 million to keep tabs on protected free speech and dissent against government policies on the Internet.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), which triggered the hearing by publishing a trove of secret government documents in January, told Raw Story on Thursday that a second round of documents they’ve obtained directly contradicts testimony given on Feb. 16, showing that the DHS instructed their analysts to do exactly what the Department denied.
