Just sent this message to my senators:

I have heard that President Obama is seeking $36 billion to enhance the DOE’s loan program for building new nuclear power reactors.

This is nuts! If there is one thing we should have learned this year, it’s that nuclear power is NOT the answer; it is too expensive and too dangerous. Please do not support this program, or any other that puts any of our all too precious tax money into a risky and hazardous energy source.

We should be investing in renewable energy development, conservation and innovation, not old ideas that create more problems than they solve.

If you look at public opinion polls, you will see that most Americans do not want the nuclear power industry to be subsidized by the government. If their product is so great, let them pay for it themselves.

Other countries, particularly Japan and Germany, are way ahead of the US in working toward a sustainable energy future. Their efforts are also creating jobs, which I don’t have to tell you we urgently need in this country.

I urge you to do everything you can to ensure that the US does not get left behind in this area.  End the loan program for new nuclear reactors so we can focus on clean and safe energy sources.
